Personalized System of Instruction – PSI

I like the concept of PSI.  At its core, the PSI focuses on well-defined objectives and the student’s ability to demonstrate unit proficiency prior to advancing to a new unit of instruction.  The pace of knowledge acquisition and progression is determined by the student and results in some flexibility in the timing of tests.

I like that immediate feedback is available to the student so that they can focus on areas of deficiency in order to demonstrate mastery and progress.   I also like that the student is able to retake tests as often as necessary.  I believe that this helps the student build on the strengths of their understanding, while focusing on their problem areas.

Maria Montessori had this concept in mind when she developed her own teaching method and it is now one of the foundational values of the Montessori School systems.
